Injury updates: Thome, Hutchison, McGowan and Bautista

Here’s a running list of injury updates around the Major Leagues:

– Doctors told veteran 1B/DH Jim Thome that he’d “need to rest for 30 days before beginning baseball activities again” after receiving an epidural shot last week for a herniated disk reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

– Rookie starter Drew Hutchison will miss the reminder of the season, and part of the 2013 season, after being diagnosed with a sprained elbow ligament reports Bob Elliot of the Toronto Sun. The right hander is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery later this week.

– Dustin McGowan is also undergoing surgery the Blue Jays announced. Aaron Gleeman of NBCSports says that McGowan will undergo arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

– Right fielder Jose Bautista is scheduled to undergo another MRI on his left wrist according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca. “He’s still complaining of some soreness in one small area, there’s a recommendation of a follow-up MRI just to compare it to the original MRI,” said manager John Farrell. “We’ll have further information once the MRI is complete.”
