Mets acquire catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Red Sox

The New York Mets announced that they have acquired veteran catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Boston Red Sox for right handed pitcher Pedro Beato (via Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com).

Shoppach, 32, is hitting .250/.327/.417 with 5 HR’s, 17 RBI’s and a 109 OPS+ in 158 plate appearances for the Boston Red Sox. His departure will allow the Red Sox to give prospect and Bobby Valentine favorite, Ryan Lavarnway more playing time.
