Indians sign Nick Swisher

The Cleveland Indians have signed Nick Swisher to a four-year deal worth $56mm, Mark Feindsand of the New York Daily News reports. The deal also includes a $14mm fifth year vesting option and can vest based on a certain number of plate appearances in ‘16.

Indians had interest in Swisher from the get go, but the Indians may not have been his first choice. Swisher’s wife who is an actress, would have preferred to sign in Los Angeles or New York but was unable to make it work. The Dodgers even looked at trading Andre Ethier and then signing Swisher but were not able to make it work.

Swisher hit .272/.364/.473 with 24 home runs and 93 RBIs for the Yankees last season. The Yankees made a qualifying to Swisher so whichever team signs him will lose their first round draft pick. In the Indians case, their pick is protected so they would lose their second round pick.
