Mariners acquire Kendrys Morales from Angels
The Seattle Mariners have acquired DH/ 1B Kendrys Morales from the Los Angeles Angels for pitcher Justin Vargas, the Mariners announced.
The Angels had been looking to move someone, as they had a surplus of outfielders/ DHs after the Josh Hamilton signing. The team preferred to move Morales and keep Mark Trumbo and Peter Bourjos. With the move, Bourjos will slot in at center while Trumbo will take over as the teams primary DH.
Morales who missed about a about a season and a half recovering from a broken leg, finally returned this season. He went on to hit .273/.320/.467 with 22 home runs and 73 RBIs in 484 at-bats.
The Angels were looking to acquire an innings eater, and got just that in Vargas. Last season for the Mariners, he went 14-11 with a 3.85 ERA. He posted 141 Ks in 217 1/3 innings and is in the final year of arbitration.
The acquisition of Vargas means that Garret Richards will more than likely start the season off at Triple-A and provide rotation depth.
